This book provides the beginner alto saxophone player with all the skills you need to get started. Following simple illustrated lessons, you will learn to play in a variety of styles - from funk and pop to soul, jazz and blues. Easy-to-follow lessons will help you pick up the essentials - creating a warm, rich, even sound, mastering rhythm and notation, and improvising - until you are ready to join a band and start jamming! The backing CD provides accompanying tracks to help you play the right style, and demonstrations of the material for you to listen to and emulate. The book isn't only for alto sax players, students of the tenor sax will also get plenty from the lessons and the scale library, allowing them to create simple improvisations and letting them 'jazz up' a melody. About the author Ollie Weston is Professor of Jazz Saxophone at the Guildhall School of Music and currently runs both the Jazz Workshop and the Jazz MA courses for the Junior School. As well as numerous smaller groups, he writes and arranges music for his own quartet, and co-leads the Zephyr Saxophone Quartet. His session credits include 19 Management, Island Records, Edwyn Collins, Jamie Cullum and Amy Winehouse. Ollie has also played in many West End productions.

This spiral wire hybrid bound book supplies just about all the information you will need to play sax. The teaching progression is logical, clearly presented, and thorough. It supplies a history of the sax along with concise backgrounds of notable sax luminaries. It is an adult level book not primarily oriented toward young children although it does have pictorial representations. It also has reference tools such as a quick reference fingering chart, and an expanded fingering chart with photographic illustrations. It also has a scale library, and a CD. It is about 6 1/2" wide by 8" high. This rather compact size is a surprising choice for a music book, and limits the legibility distance. I would prefer a larger format sized for a music stand. This would allow for the simultaneous reading and playing amenable for students.Product details

Learn to Play Sax A Beginner Guide to Playing Saxophone Ollie Weston 9781845433550 Books Reviews
Beginner at an advance age 51. Saw book in local bookstore & bought it solely for the finger charts to bring along to my music lessons. The ones that I would print from the internet were too small to read & confusing.
As I took time off from lessons, I found that it is a decent beginner's book. It explains what I find as difficult music theory in understandable language.
It has a play along CD & a cache of scales which I haven't gotten to yet.
It is also a very 'hip' book with asides on songs & artists that it encourages you to check out.
For a beginner like me, this is an excellent book. The only negative comment I have is the book size format. I'm an old guy who wears bi-focals. The format is too small to use on a music stand which makes it difficult to read and play my sax at the same time. That is mostly an inconvenience, not a deal breaker. If you're a beginner, get this book.
