Kathy Taylor had weathered eight rough years as a black female police officer in Boston - but enough was enough. She turned in her badge, moved up north, and set up shop as a private investigator in historic Salem, Massachusetts. Now she's surrounded by Wiccans and herbalists, by crystal shops and psychic pizza-deliverymen.

And her first client has just stepped in the door.

The Lucky Cat is the starting point in the Salem Massachusetts Mini Mystery series. These short stories were written and loaded one a day from October 1 through October 31, 2014. You can read them one-by-one if you wish, or, if you prefer, you can read them as a complete boxed set. All author's proceeds from this series benefit battered women's shelters.

Lisa has lived in scenic Massachusetts since 1986, with only two brief forays out of state. One of Lisa’s ancestors was Ann Foster, who died during the Salem Witch Trials. Ann Foster was a grandmother by that time and sacrificed herself to protect her daughter and granddaughter. Ann had been born in England, came over in 1635, and was 75 by the time of the trials. Salem reached its dark depths during those trials from 1692-1693 - but since then has healed, blossomed, and now shines. Salem features the amazing Peabody Essex Museum, a plethora of gorgeous historic architecture, and a beautiful coastline. It's well worth a visit.

If you can't go in person, enjoy a virtual trip through Lisa's first-hand descriptions!

Kathy takes the case and together they quickly discover what happened and find resolution for everyone.

In Short: If you like your mysteries extra cozy and are interested in short reads (15 pages) that are part of a series check this book and others by this author out.

Pros: Cute story, well written and very descriptive. The story has a great ending that is happy for everyone involved. I love the author's writing and would definitely like to read something longer or a full series by Lisa Shea. This is a feel good story full of nice characters. There is a lot of character development for our heroine, Kathy, which will really suck you into the series.

Cons: I expected this to be more of a mystery so it was kind of disappointing for me when the culprit so easily appeared and spilled the beans. This story was a bit too short and rushed, lacking development. Not my favorite story by this author but I would still be interested in reading more of this series to see how other cases play out.

The Lucky Cat Black Cat Vol 1 A Salem Massachusetts Mini Mystery edition by Lisa Shea Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This was not a book it was a very short story. Why this lady was here and the first thing she did. Way to short, all of these black cat books were way to short. Good stories but just too short. Each one is linked to the next but you have to pull up and Unlimited because please don't buy these because, you guessed it, way to short!
We all remember bonding with a favorite pet as. children, and that bond seems ever stronger for kids with medical conditions.
This shares just a taste of those issues, as well as the extremes a parent goes through to make that child's potentially brief life the best possible life it can be. And those lives seem to truly touch all whom they encounter. And you'll see that, too, in this brief but sweet tale.
You'll finish this with smiles and tears of joy. And, if you read it to the kids, they'll learn from it.
Delightful, sweet short story.
Kathy was an eight year officer at the Boston P D. She was tired of having her but grabbed by everyone including her bosses and her friend was wanting to move to Florida. She had a Private Eye business and if Kathy took it over, her friend could open a new shop in Florida. She decided that if she was her own boss, her but would be safe.
Her first client arrived before she was unpacked, but who would turn down money and business. Paula was very upset because she had a break-in at her home. Kathy went into policewoman mode and started taking a statement.
She told Kathy the only thing stolen was her daughter's cat. Her daughter, Suzy, had cancer and the only thing making her feel better was her cat. She also told her, she knows she sounds crazy, she can already see her daughter's health getting worse.
Kathy doesn't know what she can do but decides to go over to her client's home and take a look. To find out the end of this mystery you need to read this story. This is a good story to uplift your spirits and put a skip in your step.
The Lucky Cat is a mini series of short stories about a police officer turned PI. Her first case involves the mysterious disappearance of young child's therapy cat. If you're looking for a quick and breezy mystery tale, The Lucky Cat will satisfy that need.

I was not, however, at all satisfied with how The Lucky Cat played out. The characters weren't developed and there wasn't really any world building. The conclusion of the mystery included people that were way too forgiving. Don't get me wrong, forgiving people is a fantastic gesture; it just caused the mystery to fall flat and pretty much indicates that theft is okay regardless of the reasons. I just didn't find the story believable or enjoyable.

The writing style of the author is smooth and understandable. With more development, the main character and any secondary characters would might become more believable. Characters, plot, story, and conclusions of books, regardless of length, are key to keeping people reading a series. As such, with the multitude of books I have piling up, I won't be continuing with this series.

**Please note that just because I gave the short story 2 stars doesn't mean you won't like it. Reviews are subjective.
I believe that the author has a good heart, donating a portion of the proceeds from the sales of this book to the battered women's shelter. Lisa Shea decided to write one short story per day throughout October, with a black cat in each story. I hope that eventually all of the books will be put into one big collective book, since this one little story is just enough to leave me wanting more, even though it's very sweet. The battered women's shelter will benefit greatly from each of the sales, as well as the much--needed publicity that could potentially bring more attention and help, for such an extremely worthwhile, necessary facility, which can definitely needs all of the help that it can get, in order to help make a difference for so many deserving women and children.

Thank you, Lisa Shea, for choosing a worthwhile, noble cause, and making a Herculean attempt to fill a need. The whole world would be a better place to live, if every person chose at least one worthy cause to champion, and committed to providing money, donations, goods, food, or volunteered time and effort to improve people's lives through that cause. Your efforts and selfless contributions towards fulfilling that need, makes you, Lisa Shea, a hero. Thank you so much for all that you've done, and all that you continue to do. I hope that everyone who has the chance and the opportunity, will continue to expand upon your efforts, and example, and "pay it forward," to the battered women's shelter and other public services. Thanks again!
