The Narrowboat Lad tells the true story of author Daniel Mark Brown's first steps into the world of living on a boat.
At the age of 25 during the summer of 2012 Dan found his ideal home, the fact that it was nearly 100 miles of canal away from his workplace, friends and family gave him a rough and ready introduction to what it meant to own a boat as his first task was to travel the slow way home... in his home.
Dan recounts the first trip day by day, the highs of being a homeowner where every room has a view that can change daily, the lows of having steam burst from below deck and an overheating engine and everything in between from the perfect natural surrounds to the long hard days of lock working.
After the long trip home we are then given a view of his first year onboard as Tilly the narrowboat is transformed into a full time home and the seasons bring their own tint to boat life, particularly a winter that wont soon be forgotten.
Written with honesty and humour Dan gives readers an insight into living on a boat, his own life and personality and why people in his local area instantly know who someone is referring to when they say "The Narrowboat Lad".

I read this e-book in one sitting, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having gone through similar trials and tribulations on my own barge in Holland, I can so easily relate to the heart stopping fear Dan experienced when things went wrong in his early days. In many respects, I am envious as Dan was able to experiment more than I dare to as I live on very busy commercial waterways, but I really loved reading about his long journey home having never stepped on board a boat before. I also enjoyed reading about how he grew into this boating life and made it his own. A lovely heartwarming story. Like the other reviewer who mentioned it, he would have got five stars if it had been professionally edited.Product details

The Narrowboat Lad eBook Daniel Mark Brown Reviews
This is nice reading that goes with Dan's youTube channel nicely ... But, like many self published books could use an editor to get rid of the little flaws that are in the book, but they don't get in the way really . . but if you are expecting a highly polished book . . .
This is an excellent depiction of life lived on a boat in general, and in this case on an English canal. The young gentleman has chosen to live a minimalist life style, similar to that of Thoreau at Walden Pond.
I read the entire book in one setting and I will be purchasing the rest of them. I purchased my own 10 x 28 old 1972 tank of a boat in June of 2012 so I share this period with Dan. I turned it into a houseboat and explored all over our large lake in Arkansas. I wish we had something like the canals of the UK here in the United States.
This is a wonderful little book written by a young man who's experiencing his dream. Despite the flaws that other readers have pointed out, it's an honest straightforward and delightfully honest read. He's an innocent discoverer of life. It's a quality all of us should have. This is a refreshing, easy read.
Dan writes with such honesty that your heart squeezes for him when he's describing his trials and difficult moments. He is mature enough to have recognised how Immature he was when he lived in the family home and also when he was faced with his first few difficulties. It took me back to my own youth and the combination of feelings you have as a young adult. On the one hand you're all grown up and "know everything" and on the other you're a frightened child. He seems such a lovely lad. I hope his parents are proud of him, I know I would be! I hope we meet up one day "on the cut".
After watching a few of his videos I decided to give his first book a try. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. The way he tells of both the high points and low points of his adventure with an attitude that makes every event an enjoyable lesson makes this a great read.
I enjoyed every word of this book. I've followed Dan Brown's videos on and off for a long time so my enjoyment of the book was enhanced by his familiar "voice". I believe he is an excellent nature writer and when I read through some of his descriptions, his writing reminded me of Roger Deakin and his wonderful book "Waterlog". Dan's work will be a body of work to read and enjoy for a long time to come. I've loaded some of his short stories to my and they are on the top of my TBR (to be read) pile.
